Today, many users use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. to form, maintain and manage relationships with others. To maintain social relationships, social media users are disclosing a variety of information such as profiles, posts, comments, and photographs that reveals themselves online. However, this self-disclosure also carries with it a potential risk of privacy breach. This study examines the reasons why social media users disclose sensitive personal information despite their concerns about privacy. Furthermore, we also discuss the phenomenon of privacy paradox that has been covered in previous research. Research model was developed, and empirically tested with cross-sectional data from 359 Facebook users. The results indicated that social relevance had a statistically significant effect on self-disclosure and moderated the relationship between privacy concerns and self-disclosure. In the case of high level of social relevance, self-disclosure occurs regardless of whether privacy concerns are high or low. When social relevance is low, the higher the concern for privacy, the less self-disclosure, users have been found to be self- disclosure at least by reasonable judgment. |
