Teaches at the Ethiopian Civil Service University, College of Leadership and Governance, as an assistant professor. In 2010, he was awarded Ph.D. in Development Studies at the Department of International Environmental and Development Studies (Noragric) - Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) where he presented his thesis on the Environmental History of the ancient tula wells in Borana. His articles have appeared in Human Ecology, Historical Geography, The Geographical Journal and Journal of...;
Professor at the Faculty of LANDSAM, Norwegian University of Life Sciences. He has conducted research on rangeland ecology and pastoralism in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia and for brief periods in Uganda and Tanzania. In addition to numerous peer-reviewed articles, he is the author of three books: Nomads in the Shadows of Empires (Brill 2013), Climate Change Adaptations in Africa: An Historical Ecology (Routledge 2014) and Herder Warfare in East Africa (The White Horse Press, 2017;
